Remote Beef Grading Updates

Jun 16 • 2 min read

The ability to apply grades to beef carcasses has long been too expensive for small processors.  However, since piloting a program in 2023, with a larger rollout in 2024 the USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) has made remote grading of beef carcasses possible.  Processors can contact USDA AMS to become part of the program.  A detailed standard operating procedure for properly obtaining images and data management and a phone with a high-quality camera that can upload images is all that is required to grade carcasses.  In June 2026 USDA announces the launch of a new app that will simplify the image collection and upload procedures.  The app can be used on most cell phones and is made available upon approval of remote grading at a facility.

The ability to apply grades to beef carcasses may add value and open markets for many smaller processors.  In addition, utilizing the proper procedures will allow small processors to apply a certification stamp such as Certified Angus Beef™ to carcass that meet requirements.  To start the process of adding remote grading to your facility, go to the website:  https://www.ams.usda.gov/services/remote-beef-grading
